Billy Dye

Creative Collaborator, Choir Director Songwriters Series, “Behind the Curtain”

Originally from Maryland, Billy graduated from Shenandoah Conservatory of Music and Virginia Commonwealth University. Before moving to the Richmond area he served as Vocal Supervisor at Williamsburg VA’s Busch Gardens for numerous years. While there he coached, wrote and directed a variety of shows and vocal styles.

Billy wrote and directed the ‘edutainment’ musical “Songs from the Soul”, a show for Virginia Repertory Theatre's children's touring shows rotation. Not limited to Virginia, Billy’s artistic influence can be heard as far as Nashville, Tennessee and Branson, Missouri. Billy’s varied background and experiences in the arts are said to make an unquestionable contribution to the growth and development of young, well-rounded performers and musicians. As a result of this contribution, the former Richmond Boys Choir was a recipient of the Theresa Pollak Award for Excellence in the Arts and a prestigious “Coming Up Taller” award granted by the National Endowment for the Arts to the choir as a noteworthy youth focused after-school program. Under Billy’s direction the ensemble proudly performed at the White House award ceremony and at the Kennedy Center.

 

Additionally, Mr. Dye leads an active music, theatre, film and TV performance career. His theatre performance credits include roles in award-winning productions of "The Color Purple" and "Dreamgirls". Other favorites include productions of “Company”, "Ain’t Misbehavin’,"You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown" and "Once On This Island".

 

Billy previously worked with SPARCs "Live Art”. He is most proud to serve on the faculty at Henrico High Schools- Center for the Arts where he teaches musical theatre. He is currently working on original music for a holiday audio drama podcast play.
